Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is preparing to make greater use of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced digital technologies as it seeks to transform the way tourists discover, plan and experience the state. Tourism Minister P. C. Vishnunadh outlined the government's digital tourism vision in a message marking World Tourism Day 2026.

The World Tourism Day theme this year, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” has placed technology at the centre of discussions about the future of the global tourism industry. Kerala Tourism has said it is already working towards integrating AI and other emerging technologies into its tourism ecosystem.

According to the Tourism Minister, the objective is not simply to introduce new technology but to create a more connected tourism system in which visitors can access information and services more easily. This includes improving the digital journey from finding a destination and selecting experiences to making bookings, payments and accessing hospitality services.

From destination promotion to complete travel experiences

The government's approach envisages moving beyond the traditional model of promoting individual destinations and tourism products separately. Instead, the focus is on creating a more integrated Keralam tourism experience, connecting different attractions, services and experiences through digital platforms.

AI could play a growing role in helping travellers identify experiences suited to their interests, while digital platforms can make tourism services easier to access before and during a trip. The Tourism Department is also examining ways in which technology can improve the management of destinations and tourism infrastructure.

Technology for homestays and local tourism businesses

The digital transformation is also expected to reach smaller tourism businesses. The Tourism Department has already prepared a programme to help homestays adopt technology-based management practices, with the aim of improving service quality.

The government is also looking at encouraging startups to develop technology solutions for the tourism sector. Kerala's existing startup and innovation ecosystem could provide opportunities for young entrepreneurs to develop applications and other digital tools for tourism services, destination management and visitor experiences.

Focus on inclusive and sustainable tourism

Technology is also being positioned as a tool for making tourism more inclusive and sustainable. The government has emphasised the importance of barrier-free tourism and better management practices at destinations.

The state's Responsible Tourism initiatives are another area identified for greater digital integration. According to the Tourism Minister, future programmes will seek to connect community-based responsible tourism experiences with AI and digital platforms, potentially giving local tourism enterprises greater visibility among travellers.

A new digital phase for Kerala Tourism

The latest announcement comes as Kerala seeks to strengthen its position as an international experiential tourism destination. The state is simultaneously working on wider tourism infrastructure and destination development, including plans to strengthen tourism facilities across 100 destinations announced at Kerala Travel Mart 2026.

The Tourism Minister said the forthcoming Tourism Policy will give greater importance to technology-led initiatives. The government's decision to accord industry status to tourism is also expected to support the sector's broader development.

As travellers increasingly depend on digital platforms to research destinations, compare experiences and make reservations, Kerala's move towards an AI-enabled tourism ecosystem could reshape how the state presents its attractions to both domestic and international visitors.

The emphasis on technology also comes with a wider objective: ensuring that the benefits of digital tourism reach local communities, homestays, small businesses and emerging destinations, rather than being limited to major tourism centres.
