Vagamon Glass Bridge to Reopen After Nine-Month Closure Following Safety Upgrades
VAGAMON, KERALA: The popular Vagamon Adventure Park Glass Bridge at Kolahalamedu is moving towards reopening after remaining closed for nearly nine months, with structural strengthening work now planned to improve its safety and stability.
The glass bridge, one of Vagamon's best-known adventure tourism attractions, was closed following concerns related to its structural safety. An expert committee, including specialists from the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut), has recommended strengthening measures before the attraction can resume operations.
According to the latest developments, the bridge will undergo structural reinforcement based on the recommendations of the expert panel. The work is expected to take around a month.
However, visitors will have to wait until the strengthening work is completed and the bridge successfully undergoes structural testing and certification. The final safety assessment will be carried out under the supervision of NIT Calicut before permission is given to reopen the attraction.
Major attraction for Vagamon tourism
Located at Kolahalamedu, the glass bridge became one of Vagamon's major tourist attractions because of its elevated viewpoint and transparent floor, offering visitors panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Its prolonged closure has been a setback for Vagamon's adventure tourism sector, particularly as the hill station continues to attract visitors looking for outdoor activities and scenic experiences.
The proposed safety upgrades are therefore being viewed as an important step towards restoring one of the destination's most recognisable attractions.
Safety to remain the priority
The reopening process is expected to place greater emphasis on structural safety rather than simply restoring visitor access. The bridge will be opened only after the recommended strengthening measures are completed and technical inspections confirm that it meets the required safety standards.
The involvement of NIT Calicut in the assessment and certification process is also expected to provide greater confidence among tourists and tourism operators regarding the safety of the attraction.
Boost expected for Vagamon adventure tourism
The eventual reopening could provide a fresh boost to Vagamon tourism, particularly during the upcoming holiday and tourism seasons. The glass bridge has become an important part of the destination's adventure-tourism identity, alongside paragliding, trekking, off-road activities and other outdoor attractions.
Tourism businesses in Vagamon are likely to benefit from renewed visitor interest once the bridge becomes operational again.
For now, however, tourists should wait for an official reopening announcement before planning a visit specifically to the glass bridge. The attraction is expected to resume operations only after the strengthening work, testing and certification process have been successfully completed.
