Vagamon Road Travel Hit by Overgrown Vegetation, Damaged Sections and Blocked Culverts
VAGAMON, September 2026: Travel on roads leading towards Vagamon is facing renewed difficulties, with overgrown roadside vegetation, damaged stretches and blocked culverts creating problems for motorists and raising concerns about road safety.
According to a report published on September 30, thorny bushes have grown along sections of the road between Kallam and Karikadu, narrowing the usable road space. A two-wheeler rider was reportedly injured after swerving to avoid an approaching vehicle and coming into contact with the overgrown vegetation.
The road has also reportedly suffered erosion at several locations. In some stretches, vehicles are being forced to move closer to the opposite side of the road, increasing the risk of accidents. The absence of adequate warning signs has added to concerns among regular commuters and visitors.
Blocked culverts add to the problem
Blocked drainage culverts are another concern along the route. Debris left behind by earlier rains has reportedly obstructed water flow, resulting in water and mud reaching the road during periods of heavy rainfall. Local residents have called for the culverts to be cleared and maintained to prevent further deterioration.
Travellers and residents are seeking immediate removal of the roadside vegetation, installation of warning signs, clearing of blocked culverts and repairs to damaged sections.
Importance for Vagamon tourism
The condition of approach roads is particularly important for Vagamon as the hill station enters the post-monsoon tourism period. Vagamon attracts visitors throughout the year for its rolling grasslands, pine forests, tea plantations, viewpoints and adventure activities.
The road concerns come at a time when adventure tourism is receiving increased attention across Keralam. Vagamon is specifically identified as one of the state's important destinations for land and air-based adventure activities, including paragliding.
Improved road maintenance, drainage and visitor-safety measures could therefore play an important role in supporting smooth tourist movement during the upcoming travel season.
