Keralam Plans Feasibility Study for Idukki Dam Tourism Corridor
The Kerala government has announced a feasibility study for a proposed Idukki Dam Tourism Corridor, an initiative aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure and promoting the scenic attractions of Idukki district. The proposal could improve visitor facilities and create new opportunities for tourism-related businesses and local communities across the high ranges.
Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph announced the proposed study in the Kerala Legislative Assembly after Idukki MLA Roshy Augustine raised the suggestion. The initiative seeks to explore ways to develop the region's dams, reservoirs, viewpoints, and other attractions into a more accessible, coordinated tourism circuit.
Key Destinations Proposed for Tourism Development
The proposed tourism corridor is expected to examine tourism opportunities around several popular locations in Idukki, including:
- Idukki and Cheruthoni dams: Major engineering landmarks surrounded by the Western Ghats.
- Anchuruli Tunnel and reservoir viewpoints: Scenic locations known for their distinctive landscape and reservoir views.
- Calvary Mount: A popular viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Idukki reservoir and surrounding hills.
- Kalyanathandu: A hilltop destination known for its expansive mountain and reservoir scenery.
- Kulamavu: A picturesque destination associated with the Idukki reservoir and forested hills.
- Vazhathope Hill View Park: A location with potential for improved visitor amenities and sightseeing.
- Ayyappancoil Hanging Bridge: A notable attraction offering views of the surrounding landscape.
Better Facilities and New Opportunities for Local Communities
Improving basic tourism infrastructure is an important aspect of the proposal. Facilities under consideration include parking areas, public toilets, drinking water and other amenities to make visits more convenient for tourists.
Better coordination between destinations could also encourage visitors to spend more time exploring Idukki, benefiting local accommodation providers, taxi operators, restaurants, guides and small businesses. Sustainable tourism development could create additional employment opportunities while supporting the region's natural and scenic attractions.
The possibility of allowing more regular public access to the dam area was also discussed. However, this should not be interpreted as a confirmed decision to change existing access arrangements. Any changes would depend on the relevant authorities and applicable safety and security requirements.
What the Proposal Means for Vagamon Tourism
Although Vagamon is not specifically listed among the locations identified for the proposed corridor, the initiative could be relevant to the wider tourism sector in Idukki district.
Vagamon, known for its rolling grasslands, viewpoints, adventure activities and plantation landscapes, could benefit indirectly if improved tourism infrastructure encourages more travellers to explore multiple destinations across the high ranges. Better connectivity and coordinated itineraries could create opportunities to combine Vagamon with Idukki Dam, Calvary Mount, Kulamavu and other attractions.
For tour operators and accommodation providers, the proposal highlights the potential for developing multi-destination itineraries that showcase the diverse landscapes and experiences available across Idukki.
Feasibility Study to Determine the Next Steps
The proposed feasibility study is an initial step towards assessing the tourism corridor's potential. Further details on project scope, funding, implementation timelines and infrastructure development will depend on the findings of the study and subsequent government decisions.
If implemented, the initiative could strengthen Idukki's position as a multi-destination tourism region, offering visitors a combination of reservoirs, mountain viewpoints, forest landscapes and local experiences.
