Tourism Activity Resumes in Vagamon as Idukki Prepares for Onam Tourist Season
Vagamon, August 22, 2026: Tourism activity has resumed across Idukki, including Vagamon, following a period of exceptionally heavy monsoon rain that had temporarily led authorities to restrict tourism activities at several destinations in the district. With the rains subsiding and the Onam holiday season approaching, Vagamon is once again attracting attention as one of Kerala's popular hill destinations.
The Idukki district administration withdrew the tourism restrictions on August 10 after weather conditions improved. The restrictions had been imposed following heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides across the district, affecting destinations including Vagamon and other major tourist centres.
Vagamon experienced particularly intense rainfall during the recent spell. On August 1, the hill station recorded around 314 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, among the highest totals reported in Kerala during the extreme monsoon episode. The heavy rain caused widespread disruption in Idukki and led authorities to take precautionary measures at tourist locations.
With tourism activities now restored, Vagamon is expected to see increased visitor movement during the upcoming Onam holidays. The destination's rolling grasslands, pine forests, viewpoints, tea plantations and cool hill climate continue to make it attractive to travellers looking for a short getaway from Kerala's cities.
The return of tourism also highlights the importance of monsoon safety in Vagamon. Visitors should exercise particular caution around streams, waterfalls and other natural water bodies after heavy rainfall.
The renewed tourism activity comes at an important time for Vagamon. As Kerala moves towards the Onam holiday season, the hill station is expected to benefit from increased domestic travel, while its distinctive monsoon landscape continues to provide a different experience from the peak summer and winter tourism periods.
For visitors planning a trip to Vagamon, Kerala, this Onam Season will offer a wonderful experience.
