VAGAMON, August 23, 2026: A recent drowning incident at Chottupara near Vagamon has highlighted the need for greater caution among tourists visiting streams, waterfalls and other natural water bodies during Kerala's monsoon season.

A 24-year-old visitor from Kottayam drowned while bathing in a stream at Chottupara on August 16. According to reports, he had arrived in Vagamon with a group of friends and was staying at a resort in the area. The accident occurred in the morning when the group entered the stream, and the visitor was swept away by a strong current into a deep section of the water.

Friends attempted to rescue him, while local residents, Vagamon police and the Peermade Fire and Rescue Services joined the search. After several hours, the rescue team recovered his body. Police subsequently registered a case of unnatural death.
